The latest three Who novels haven't turned out to be very inspirational or diverse so far, and sadly the final one- The King's Dragon- does little to buck this trend, offering a mundane and predictable yarn where the Doctor, Amy and Rory head to the alien city of Geath in search of relaxation, but find war, spaceships and secrets waiting there. Standard Who stuff, then, but author Una McCormack seems to have felt it necessary to construct an average cast of newcomers who only make brief and unexciting appearances every few chapters, thus providing a backdrop for themes such as Amy and Rory's relationship (bearing in mind this takes place in between The Vampires Of Venice and The Hungry Earth) and the Doctor's effect on the people he meets in life. However, even these aren't put to good use, making The King's Dragon an uneventful and therefore unenjoyable novel only saved by the use of an exhilirating premise similar somewhat to Monsters Of Men (though this is only a premise and doesn't get carried through with much)!
