Doctor Who: Evacuation Earth Review (8/10)

I went on record recently to say that Doctor Who probably couldn't ever work in video gaming- I was wrong. Despite the Wii episode Return To Earth (6/10) starting well but ultimately becoming too irritatingly difficult to persevere and complete, the DS story Evacuation Earth is a great way of bringing the show's quirky nature onto the handheld. It takes place after the events of Return for the Doctor and Amy, but a few hundred years earlier for the human race as the starship Lucy Gray that the time travellers save in Return is preparing to leave for that journey, only to be boarded by Silurians and Daleks! It's a classic science-fiction premise that delivers for the majority in Evacuation, as the Doctor and Amy solve puzzles to get through the ship and back to the TARDIS...wait, puzzles, I hear you ask? That I forgot to mention: this is a more-than-subtle clone of the Professor Layton series, stealing the arrow-move system, victory or failure puzzle animations and anime cutscenes that make the Japanese puzzle hit such a great franchise. If you've been playing Layton for years now, then Evacuation Earth might feel like some not-so-welcome deja vu, but on the other hand Who fans everywhere rejoice: there's finally a great game adaptation!
