2011 Games To Watch #3: Portal 2

It came as a mere diversion in a set containing the Half-Life games and Team Fortress 2, yet Portal (9/10) quickly gained a cult following with its crazy physics puzzles and laid-back but equally comedic plot focusing on your character Chell's quest to make it through the Portal testing facility using his gravity gun and escape the clutches of quirky artificial intelligence GLaDOS. Predictably enough, demands for a sequel came heavy and fast in developer Valve's inbox, so their announcement of Portal 2 last March came as no surprise. This refined instalment will continue from the where the expansion Alone left off- upon killing GLaDOS and escaping the facility, Chell was knocked out by an unseen foe, transported back inside and put into stasis. Hundreds of years later, the protagonist wakes to find GLaDos attempting to rebuild Portal, and tries to help the seeemingly reformed villain with the aid of new AI Wheatley (played by none other than Extras writer and budding comedian Stephen Merchant). Trouble is, can the system controlling Portal that mercilessly betrayed you in the original possibly have learnt the error of its ways? I doubt it, and that GLaDOS will be rebuilding the facility in real-time as you complete dozens more unique gravity puzzles makes Portal 2 almost the best-looking game out in 2011 (though when I show you my Top 2, you'll probably see why it's here). That, of course, is without mentioning the new co-op campaign that tasks players to work as teams to solve the mysteries of Portal and adding another full storyline- if it works, it'll make Portal 2 much more than essential!
