Dead Space 2 Review (9/10)

That Dead Space 2 is opening 2011, a year packed with top-class video games, feels totally right- not only does it have impressive visuals and a smooth game-play engine but it makes major steps forward in how stories are told in its genre. Within seconds of playing the opening moments I became tense, yelping at any slight bang I heard turning a corner or any hallunication (no matter how unlikely) that protagonist Isaac Clarke suffered roaming the corridors of the Sprawl, a suitably futuristic alien capital housing the all-powerful enemies of the original (7.5/10) the Nehromorphs, and these scares continue throughout I can assure you! The quality and innovation present in Dead Space 2 really is stunning, eclipsing many of 2010's best efforts. Where the sci-fi sequel stumbles is in its gravity-based segments where the camera becomes irksome and unresponsive, plus from what I've heard (but can't say firsthand) the bonus online multi-player modes are similar to those in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (10/10), but as with that title I'm only detracting points for what is wrong with the single player campaign. If you're looking for a few sleepless nights this month and next (and let's be honest, who isn't...?), Dead Space 2 is the best place, also setting a precedent for every shooter that follows in 2011.
