Smallville: Booster Review (4/5)

You may notice I skipped out this episode (numero 18, if you're wondering) and went straight onto Dominion, but now I've watched Booster and can happily confirm it's a strong episode that more than sets Clark further on his path towards becoming the Man of Steel while adding in Booster Gold and Blue Beetle for good measure. Eric Martsolf does wonders with the titular future hero, bringing all the arrogance from the comics and yet in the end turning him into a character who Superman will surely be proud to work alongside in the days to come. The sub-plot of Clark becoming mild mannered took perhaps a little too much precedence here- I get that it's important and helps evolve the protagonist, but it begs the question why the episode couldn't have been placed earlier in the run to allow Mr. Kent an entire story to get the hang of his awkwardness. As a whole, actually, the question as to why Booster is introduced so late in the run I can't really fathom an answer to, as every step into an alternate reality, the future and the Phantom Zone feels like a step sideways and not forward for Clark, annoying seeing as the show is so near its end. Still, Booster has the charm and heart to make it a great adventure, even if its placement feels a little odd!
