Colombiana Review (1.5/5)

I take no pleasure in saying this, but it's the truth- Colombiana is a surefire contender for the Worst Film of 2011. The plot, revolving around a strong young girl's growing up into a ruthless assassin in Mexico, is ashamedly shallow, stereotypical of the country its set in (no wonder there's been so much controversy over it!) and so obvious it might as well be an 80s action movie rather than a modern day thriller. Zoe Saldana, recently made famous by her role in Avatar, does a good job of at least providing us with a believable protagonist, rocked by the death of her father and now consumed with revenge and hatred, however you'd think the supporting cast were chosen for their roles at the last minute, as no one appears to put any real effort into their portrayal and thus every scene which involves dialogue between Saldana's Cataleya and another character feels tedious and exaggerated. The action sequences can be fun to watch at first, yet quickly dissolve into overblown, predictable scenes that outstay their welcome. There really is no saving grace for this one, short of some expert direction in the various assassinations Cataleya carrys out and a mercifully brief running time. If there's one film you choose not to see this year, seriously, make it Colombiana.
