October 2011: Best Release

Was it ever going to be anything else? Batman: Arkham City swooped onto the scene last month to provide one of the most surprising and thrilling video game experiences of this generation, full of DC Universe-shifting storyline twists and powered by a sublimely reformed engine. The stealth and combat blend that made Arkham Asylum such a all-round success returned into full force here, developed gradually over the course of the twenty-hour campaign to the point that by the epic finale in the centre of the grand metropolis, you will truly feel like you are the Dark Knight himself. Not many games could attain the same level of empathy between the player and the central protagonist that this one does, and it's this strong overriding connection that's sure to bag this one several Game of the Year awards come 2011's end (it certainly puts this in very good steads for my own growing shortlist). Yes, if you have yet to experience Batman: Arkham City, you should put the time in before Modern Warfare 3 and Skyrim consume your gaming lives for months and months- as I said in my review, where the game earned lofty full marks, this truly is a genre-defining title.
