Filling The Doctor Who Void- News Roundup (12th-16th December)

Although I usually write this article on Sundays, these past five days have been so busy for Doctor Who fans that I thought it would be best to cover them now and include any updates this weekend in next week's big news round-up. So here goes...
  • A whole load of new footage of the Christmas Special, The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe, has been outed this week: a new trailer was shown on BBC One on Monday, featuring action and dark scares galore, while three more comedic clips from the episode were posted online (all of these can be found below).
  • In the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine (442), Steven Moffat has revealed more details on what the seventh season of the show will hold. "Everyone is expecting us to do another year like 2011," he says, "You're not going to get that at all. You're going to get the biggest, maddest set of episodes ever. Everything is a single episode at this stage, I want to be able to say, every week, we've got a big standalone blockbuster, and then a trailer that makes it look like nothing compared to what's going to happen next week!". So no two-parters perhaps, an interesting move on Moffat's part. Perhaps even more intriguing, though, is the exec producer is teasing Episode 1 as having "big pictures and straplines...the first episode is called [Spoiler] of the [Spoilers] and it'll feel a bit like Die Hard!" Expect some episode titles and casting announcements in next month's DWM before the new run begins filming in February!
  • Steven Moffat also made a huge announcement at the premiere of the Christmas Special last night. In a Q&A session, the writer revealed that "The Ponds will be rejoining us next series. But the final days of the Ponds are coming, I am not telling you when and I won't say how. But that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end." Could Moffat be about to kill off one or both of Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill's characters, Earthshock-style? If so, the tragic event is sure to have a huge effect on the remaining partner and/or Alex Kingston's character River Song. Either way, Steven did at least end this sad statement on a positive note, assuring us: "Then the Doctor is going to meet a new friend and I am not going to tell you about he, she or it!" and "River Song WILL return too." Series Seven looks to be getting more exciting with every passing day...
  • Matt Smith has gone on to talk about his own future on the series. Asked how long he plans to stay in the role of the Doctor, Smith didn't give a definitive answer, noting that "It depends on your physical and mental state at the end of every shoot", but that he is "quite excited by the coming year- it's the 50th anniversary, which'll let us be even bigger and bolder than ever."
More big news about Series 7 is sure to hit the official site once the Christmas Special has aired!
