Sherlock To Return On New Year's Day

As if it weren't enough to get the sequel to Robert Downey Jr's superb 2009 flick Sherlock Holmes with Sherlock Holmes: A Game In Shadows, on its way next week, the BBC have whetted our Conan Doyle appetite further by announcing that the second season of their hit drama Sherlock will begin airing on New Year's Day (January 1st, 2012). The series opens with A Scandal In Belgravia, the synopsis for which reads: "Comprimising photographs and a case of blackmail threaten the very heart of the British establisment but, for Sherlock and John, the game is on in more ways than one as they find themselves battling international terrorism, rouge CIA agents and a secret conspiracy involving the British government. But this case will cast a darker shadow over their lives than they could ever imagine, as the great detective begins a long duel of wits with an antagonist as cold and ruthless and brilliant as himself: to Sherlock Holmes, Irene Adler will always be THE woman." A Scandal In Belgravia will conclude the monumental cliffhanger posed to fans in Season One, as well as introducing Lara Pulver as Irene Adler and witnessing the return of Andrew Scott as Jim Moriarty. The episode airs at 8pm on New Year's Day, and The Hounds of Baskerville and The Reichenbach Fall will air on the following two Sunday nights, with each episode set to a running time of ninety minutes.
