Filling The Doctor Who Void- News Roundup (6th-12th February)

Torchwood: Army of One (Audio Original)
Writers and Directors confirmed, plus meet the Army of One and get the first details on a Who/Trek crossover!
What with the long 'ol wait until Doctor Who returns to our screens this Autumn, things in terms of news surrounding the show have been relatively quiet these past few weeks. Thankfully, though, with the February 20th date when Series Seven commences shooting now impending, more and more details on the new run are beginning to seep out...
PUTTING PEN TO PAPER- The new issue of Doctor Who Magazine has revealed that Chris Chibnall and Toby Whithouse will pen episodes of the new season that's due to start shooting next Monday. Chibnall has previously written for the show with Series Three's 42 (2007) and Series Five's Silurian two-parter The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood (2010), plus was a regular contributor to the first three seasons of Torchwood, while Being Human creator Whithouse has already given us School Reunion, The Vampires of Venice and The God Complex, each amongst my favourite episodes of their respective pieces. Caroline Skinner confirmed that Chibnall's piece features "the biggest set Doctor Who has ever had- EVER!" and that Whithouse's is a "big blockbuster of a genre piece". She also teased that Steven Moffat's opening episode for the 2013 run "is so enormous it will blow everyone's minds"! Look forward to all of them in months to come, then...
THE END IS JUST THE BEGINNING- Another DWM exclusive is the Moff's teasing of Amy and Rory's departure from Doctor Who later this year. "Endings are tough, and you'll never, ever be ready," the exec producer says, "but don't get too depressed. Someone new is out there- someone completely different. And we'll be meeting that person very soon..."
DIRECT ACTION- The official Who website has also confirmed the name of one of the directors for the 2012 run. Saul Metzstein, helmer of various eps of Being Human and the upcoming period drama Upstairs Downstairs (starring Alex Kingston, aka River Song), will direct the first episode to shoot this year, quite possibly Steven Moffat's season opener. Exciting times ahead!
WHO'S ON THE ENTERPRISE?- Yep, there's going to be a comic-book crossover between two sci-fi greats this Summer, thanks to IDW Publishing! Keep an eye here at the blog for all the details on an unnamed project tieing Doctor Who into Star Trek: The Next Generation very soon...
ARM YOURSELF (POST-MIRACLE!)- A new Torchwood audiobook called Army of One has been announced for release next month, and very excitingly it takes place after the events of Miracle Day! A detective is on the trail of Gwen and Rhys, who are forced to face a new alien threat...but what has become of Rex? Expect subtle answers pretty soon, as well as in more audiobooks set to continue the storyline of the spin-off later this year!
