E3 Week: The Sony Press Conference

My thoughts on Sony's E3 offering, plus a full news roundup from the conference!
As we headed into the second day of E3 conferences, anticipation was high for just what Sony would bring to the showfloor. It was predicted correctly that there would be no sign of next-gen, but it seemed that the games company was struggling a bit to work out whether it was attempting to fill the PS3's final year (from now until around next Summer) or 'reboot' the PSVita, and as such there was a fair bit of alienation going on. Still, there were undoubedly a fair few great announcements- the full list of news and reveals can be seen below, as well as a video feed of the conference itself...
  • BEYOND ANNOUNCED- A brand new PS3 exclusive, Beyond looks at the illusions and dark concepts surrounding the idea of death and stars none other than Ms Ellen Page as its lead! Talk about a big name to open with.
  • PLAYSTATION ALL-STARS BATTLE ROYALE DEBUTED- Next up, it was confirmed that Uncharted's Nathan Drake and BioShock's Big Daddy would indeed be joining the line-up of the Smash Bros inspired Battle Royale that Sony are bigging up, coming to both PS3 and PSVita later this year.
  • PSONE CLASSICS ANNOUNCED- Although no specific titles were given, Sony confirmed too that a range of original PlayStation games were headed to Vita over the Summer at a bargain price. If you ever missed out on classic PS1 action, now's the time to correct that mistake!
  • CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS DECLASSIFIED ANNOUNCED- It was always known that Call Of Duty would one day arrive on Vita, and now it's been announced that the first portable entry of the series on the handheld will be called Black Ops Declassified and retail alongside Black Ops II this November.
  • ASSASSIN'S CREED III: LIBERATION ANNOUNCED- One of the big announcements came in the revelation that a portable version of Assassin's Creed III was coming to Vita. Called Liberation, the spin-off takes place in 1700s New Orleans and features a female assassin, and it will ship alongside ACIII in October.
  • ASSASSIN'S CREED III RETURNS- And speaking of the third Creed, we got a brand new dose of gameplay footage from the much-anticipated sequel. This time around, the video showed off some naval warfare, which was looking rather epic so far. There'll be some exclusive DLC coming to the PS3 version too, which is always good news!
  • FARCRY 3 PS3 EXCLUSIVES REVEALED- Ubisoft went on to confirm that Far Cry 3 would be getting exclusive DLC for the PS3 too. On top of that, they showed off a co-op campaign that can be participated in by up to 4 players and that will be separate to the main storyline.
  • WONDERBOOK: BOOK OF SPELLS ANNOUNCED- Again, one of the bigger announcements of the show was a PS3 exclusive not altogether different from EyePet. J.K Rowling will be collaborating with the new Move-based Wonderbook peripheral to bring a Potter-themed title for it, Book Of Spells, only to PS3. It's strange this announcement wasn't made more fuss over by critics, because to have Rowling investing in a games franchise is a huge development for Sony!
  • GOD OF WAR: ASCENSION DEBUTED- Of course, we can't have a Sony E3 conference without a bit of Kratos, and there was no disappointment here as God Of War: Ascension got its trailer debut. Fans will no doubt be glad to hear it's looking ace, and it's on its way in March 2013.
  • THE LAST OF US DEBUTED- Finally there was another look at the frankly astounding PS3 exclusive The Last Of Us, which as I say is looking absolutely incredible. We now know it's not coming until 2013, but at least the demo sates our appetites for now!
And now here's the full video feed from the conference in case you missed it (I wouldn't blame you, at 2am on Tuesday morning!)- enjoy!
