Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Review

Was Ubisoft's frequently-delayed future shooter worth the wait?
It's hard to put into words how challenging it must have been for Ghost Recon fans to see the latest instalment in their favourite shooter series, Future Soldier, so regularly pushed back due to technical hitches or tonal shifts in the project. Now, it's finally on shelves, and although there are many great aspects in Ubisoft's latest big shooter, you do have to wonder how it took them so long to produce what is really quite a predictable and oft-dull experience. The story of Future Soldier focuses on an elite team of marines tasked with taking down a bomb-ridden terrorist cell, but this essentially leads into a series of rather drab bouts of gunplay whereby you'll be able to employ gadget-enhanced tactics in order to outwit your adversaries and then gain an advantage over them. Anyone who has been a fan of the series before will find returning to thi smode of gameplay neat and natural, but they may also certainly begin to notice that there's very little distinction to be made between this and other futuristic shooters like Mass Effect, albeit that EA's brilliant RPG does this kind of thing a lot better than Ghost Recon with far less delays. Graphically, this is no stunner either, and the soundtrack gets quite repetitive, quite early on. For series veterans, then, for better or for worse Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is more of the same, but I'd wager that unless you are one of those kinds of players who just loves to shoot enemies without the need for a comprehensive or emotive plot, this will feel like a well-aged and utterly predictable new instalment in the third-person shotoer genre, and thus you might as well give it a miss.
6/10
