Nintendo 2DS Announced

The company that brought us GameBoy, GameBoy Advance and DS fight back against Apple this Autumn!
Not content with confirming a price cut for their WiiU console and a series of release dates for their upcoming much-anticipated first party titles in 2013, Nintendo have today announced a new handheld console. Titled the Nintendo 2DS, this latest incarnation of the DS franchise will take the majority of the features of the 3DS, while at the same time removing the controversial 3D sensors of the original hardware. Both 3DS and DS titles will be compatible with the console at launch.

Although the WiiU's price cut seemed borderline inevitable by the time of its announcement today, this turn of events for the DS hardware series was not quite so foreseeable for fans. The 3DS console's sales have certainly picked up since their initial slump thanks to the release of Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time HD and Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance over the course of 2012 and 2013. By initiating this promotional tactic, though, Nintendo have a sublime opportunity to overtake Apple in hardware successes, the £110 RRP of the 2DS posing something of a taxing dilemma for those parents considering purchasing their kids a new handheld device come the Christmas season...

The Nintendo 2DS console will ship in UK retailers everywhere on October 12th.
