Sherlock Series Three Promo Image; Synopsis Debut

BBC One's acclaimed detective drama returns for a third season in the New Year!
The BBC have today released the first promotional image (left) and a press synopsis for the opening episode of Sherlock Series Three. Taking place two years after the events of The Reichenbach Fall, the latest run sees Sherlock return from his self-imposed exile to reveal his resurrection to his greatest friend and tackle three dangerous new cases.

Once again, Series Three will consist of three 90-minute episodes, the details of which are as follows: The Empty Hearse by Mark Gatiss; The Sign of Three by Stephen Thompson and His Last Vow by Steven Moffat. Here's a round-up of the BBC's press release on Series Three, Moffat and Gatiss' initial comments and the première synopsis for The Empty Hearse:

  • STEVEN MOFFAT ON SERIES THREE- "It's been a long time since Sherlock Holmes jumped off that roof- it's time to reveal the truth about what happened between him and the pavement..."
  • MARK GATISS ON SERIES THREE- "Sherlock and John Watson are back at last! And they're just where we want them- on the streets of London having mad, thrilling adventures."
  • SERIES THREE PLOT SYNOPSIS- "The question on everyone's lips will finally be answered when Sherlock returns with three brand-new action-packed adventures. How did he do it? And how will John take the news that his best friend faked his own death? What will Sherlock think when he finds out John has fallen in love with Mary Morstan? She's sensible, quick-witted and not at all taken with Sherlock's posturing. Once again, the game is on..."
  • THE EMPTY HEARSE SYNOPSIS- "'Just one more miracle, Sherlock. Stop being dead.' For Dr John Watson it might well be a case of 'be careful what you wish for.' Two years after the devastating events of The Reichenbach Fall, John appears to have got on with his life. New horizons and romance beckon. But, with London under threat of a devastating terrorist attack, Sherlock is about to take John at his word, staging his resurrection with all the theatricality that comes so naturally to him. If Sherlock thinks everything will be just as he left it, though, he's in for a very big surprise..."
Sherlock returns to BBC One soon- a New Year's Day broadcast for The Empty Hearse is predicted.
