The BBC have this week announced the termination of their crime drama Silk after three seasons. Starring Maxine Peake, Rupert Penry-Jones, Game of Thrones' Natalie Dormer and Doctor Who's Frances Barber, the series depicts the legal exploits of several barristers in a fictitious London judicial chamber.
Sadly, though it'll likely pain fans to admit it, Silk has been on a steady decline in terms of its viewer ratings over the last few weeks, amassing just 3.94 million viewers in its overnight ratings with the broadcast of Season Three's third episode on March 10th. Most successful BBC One dramas tend to only drop down below the 5-million mark on the odd off-week, so the signs weren't exactly promising when that figure was announced last week, and short of a ratings miracle between now and Episode Six's March 31st première, it looks as if the show has reached its final destination. Creator and head writer Peter Moffat has at least indicated that loyal followers will receive a degree of closure from the season finale, but in all honesty, the loss of yet another of the channel's flagship dramas will sting the corporation, especially in light of its sacrifice of BBC Three so as to garner further funds for BBC One and BBC Two's drama roster to prosper in years to come...
Silk continues with Episode Five tomorrow, March 24th on BBC One.
