Waterloo Road Axed

Another long-running BBC drama bites the dust...
The BBC have this week confirmed the cancellation of their situation drama Waterloo Road. Unlike The Musketeers and Atlantis, both of which are currently preparing to enter production on their second run, the long-running programme will not return for another season in the foreseeable future on BBC One after this year's run.

This may not necessarily be the final end for the show, of course- if Ripper Street's recent resurrection has taught us anything, it's that the TV industry can and will allow its fledging franchises to return to our screens provided that the all-too-vocal minority of viewers speak loud enough to make their voices heard across the nation. The aforementioned period detective drama was saved by funding from Amazon after an extensive protest campaign on Twitter, and with this in mind, the possibility that Waterloo Road could receive a similar renewal in the not-too-distant future is hardly improbable. If not, though, then creators Ann McManus and Maureen Chadwick can at least rest easy in the knowledge that (for better or for worse in terms of its implications for the industry's trajectory) their project was a colossal ratings hit, and that its impact on the BBC's drama output will doubtless resonate for years to come.

Waterloo Road returns to BBC One for its tenth and final season this Autumn.
