Marvel's Agent Carter First Season Commissioned

Source: Avengers Universe
The origins of S.H.I.E.L.D. are revealed as we travel back to WWII with Hayley Atwell...
ABC and Marvel Studios have today announced the commissioning of a full first season of their action drama Marvel's Agent Carter. Taking place after the events of the hit 2011 period film Captain America: The First Avenger, the show will focus primarily on Peggy Carter (played by returning star Hayley Atwell), an agent of the SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve) who'll play a fundamental role in the formation of the organization we've come to know (and love) as S.H.I.E.L.D.

Whereas the vast majority of industry analysts considered Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Season Two renewal (which was announced earlier today) to be a given, the status of this project was a little more up in the air, especially in light of the fact that there was no sign of a pilot episode being put into production. As it happens, ABC were evidently so impressed with the script for the first instalment of Marvel's Agent Carter that they've bypassed the pilot scenario entirely, an action which marks something of a rarity in the US TV industry at present.

We're hardly going to complain, though: Atwell's performance was the strongest element of The First Avenger (and to some extent The Winter Soldier) by far, and with that in mind, we're positively ecstatic to see what comes next for her character and Howard Stark. Here's the official plot précis for the series: "It's 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious below as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR, Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life- Steve Rogers."

Marvel's Agent Carter will premiere on ABC this Autumn (reportedly filling the gap between the first and second halves of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season Two).
