Sonic the Hedgehog Film Adaptation Announced

Source: Droid-Life
Never mind Speed Racer or Rush, one iconic hedgehog is about to outrun all of his cinematic competitors...
Sony Pictures have this week announced that a motion picture adaptation of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise of platforming video games is currently in the works. Published by SEGA, the series centres on the high-octane exploits of the titular blue sprinter and his ongoing battles against the nefarious Dr. Robotnik (or Dr. Eggman, as we now must apparently resign ourselves to calling the much-maligned regular antagonist).

Evidently unfazed by the notion of setting fans' alarm bells ringing by creating yet another risky video game movie, Sony have gone one dangerous step further, revealing that they're taking cues from similarly controversial flicks such as The Smurfs and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by combining live-action and animated elements into a supposedly seamless and adrenaline-charged blockbuster. Hannah Minghella (a major Sony/Columbia exec) had this to say on the adaptation: "[Sony are] looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before".

Were it not for the countless on-screen remakes of esteemed gaming franchises which have failed spectacularly in their efforts to live up to their source material (Super Mario Bros and Hitman amongst the most notorious flops), we'd try our utmost to hold out a little more hope for Sonic's prospects at the box office, but whilst we won't discount the possibility of the character's reputation preceding SEGA's mascot to such an extent that he rakes in a substantial profit in auditoriums, it'll take more than good-will and over-indulgent nostalgia to convince us that this project is a worthwhile endeavour, not to mention the overall worldwide community of film critics.

Keep it On-Screen for more details on Sonic the Hedgehog's production schedule and central players as and when they come...
